Valerie Simmons-Walston: Associate Vice President for Student Services and Director of Residence Life
Valerie Simmons-Walston is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Kent State University where she earned a B.A. in Sociology, then went on to Hampton University where she received a M.A. in Counseling. She is currently writing her dissertation and is elated to be in the final stages of earning a Doctorate in Higher Education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Walston was recently appointed the newest Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Toledo. This position affords her the opportunity to supervise a team of stellar professionals who work within the offices of Residence Life, Housing, University Counseling, the University Recreation Center, and Facilities/ Building Services. She has served in a myriad of leadership roles over the past twenty years within the Public School System, and in the area of Higher Education. Valerie has a passion for community service through community building and volunteering opportunities. Zumba is her favorite pastime along with collecting dolphins. She has a great sense of humor, contagious personality, and a zest for life.
Michele Soliz, PhD: Associate Vice President for Student Success and Inclusion

Dr. Michele Soliz serves as the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Inclusion within the Division of Student Affairs at The University of Toledo. In addition to leading the Office of Multicultural Student Success, Dr. Soliz provides leadership to Upward Bound, Toledo Excel, Career Services and the Catherine S. Eberly Center for Women.

 

With 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Soliz has served in numerous key roles across the institution including in the Office of the President. As the Executive Director of Academic Support Services and in collaboration with partners across the institution, Dr. Soliz increased the usage and visibility of academic support services which led to increases in retention and graduate rates of students. Prior to her role in the provost’s area, Dr. Soliz served as the Dean of Students. During her tenure, LGBTQA initiatives, including an LBGTQA advisory board, were formed and the institution was recognized as an LBGT friendly campus by Campus Pride, the leading national organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students.

 

She is active in the UT Latino Alumni Affiliate, serves as a mentor to Latinas and African American female students and teaches Managing Diversity in the Workplace for the College of Business and Innovation.

 

Dr. Soliz received her bachelor of arts in Ethnic Studies from Bowling Green State University and earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from UToledo in higher education, where her research focused on Latino student baccalaureate completion rates and student engagement.

 

She cherishes spending time with her three children, Nina, Jay, and Alejandro and granddaughter, Lena

Socials

Join us Friday night after opening ceremonies (9-11pm) at six different socials offered! Socials will be hosted by the current RBD members. All socials will contain fun icebreakers, games, group discussions, and much more. Feel free to join as many socials as you wish and have fun socializing with other delegates at conference!

  • NCC Social: For NCC’s members from all institutions to talk about their positions and partake in fun activities.

  • Advisors Social: For Conference Advisors to have a space discuss anything related to conference and to meet other advisors from different institutions.

  • NRHH Social: For members of NRHH to meet others and partake in fun activities.

  • RHA Social: All RHA members from different institutions can discuss how their year is going and to partake in fun activities.

  • LGBTQIA+ Social: For members of LGBTQIA+ community to have a safe and welcoming place to socialize while at conference.

  • Delegate Social: Any delegate of RLC 2020 that wants to socialize with other delegates from other institutions and have fun is welcome to this social.

Entertainment

During and leading up to conference weekend we will also be having other exciting events to participate in! 

  • Virtual 5k: Track how many miles you run, walk, bike, roller blade, etc. for our virtual 5k (3.107 miles). The best part is that you can do it on your own, in whatever location you choose. Starts on Monday, November 9th at 8am and ends Saturday, November 14th at midnight. Once you finish our 5k, post a picture on your social media and tag us! Additionally, fill out the completion form here for your completion certificate and earn 20 spirit points for your institution!

  • Netflix Watch Party: What’s better than watching Netflix movies with your friends! Saturday night starting at 9 pm, join our Netflix Watch Party to stream the classic by director Steven Spielberg: Indiana Jones ad the Raiders of the Lost Ark. The movie is filled with plenty of action and adventure to keep you on the edge of your seat. With the Netflix watch party extension, you can chat along side your friends as the movie plays.

    • How to Participate:

    1.  Download the extension above to web browser

    2.  Allow Netflix to use extension in settings of browser

    3. Click on our movie link provided to be taken to Netflix

    4. Use personal Netflix account to login or can create a free one for up to 12 days before payment

    5. Chat in extension chat box and enjoy the movie!

  • At Home Seek-and-Find: Ready for a seek in find in your own home? On Saturday night for our fun variation of this popular game, participants will find items in their own home to win points for their team. Simply join through our zoom link to play. Winning team will get prizes sent from the conference team. May the fastest team win!

  • Zumba Workout: Time to work up a sweat with our hour-long fitness class on Saturday night! All you will need is a computer and your water bottles. The University of Toledo Recreation Center has provided an instructor to teach the fun workouts of Zumba. Get ready to dance the night away!
